Inspired by tight reggae rhythm sections and thrashing punk bands, three Hofstra University graduates birthed The Roast Beef Curtains. Taking a DIY approach, Andrew, John, & Mike evolved The RBC into the best live reggae, dub, and punk experience on Long Island.
Since 2005, the trio played well over 200 shows, creating a buzz from Manhattan to Montauk. On stage, each band member works double and sometimes triple duty playing their instruments while controlling live dub effects, transforming every concert into an ear-gasmic experience.
In the summer of 2009, the trio turned quartet, when they added melodica and keyboard specialist Jimmy McGerald as the final piece to the puzzle. Since then, The Curtains have expanded their act into a jam and psychedelic party!
“Most reggae bands that look like us, consider themselves reggae-rock music,” says Mike Celano, drummer, “but the RBC are not at all limited to that genre. We consider ourselves a ‘Pleasure band’. We mix in elements of authentic dub, improvisation, and psychedelic reggae...sprinkled with some gritty punk rock!”
Andrew (lead singer/guitarist) explains that "a live, in your face, dub-filled & tripped-out experience means we did our job and brought the pleasure."
Each member of the band brings inspiration from a wide variety of artists. "Our main influences are Ween, King Tubby, Bad Brains & The Grateful Dead," states bassist John Carey.
In addition to heavy touring within the tri-state area, the band has taken the national stage on many occasions, most notably performing at the Bonnaroo Music Festival 2010 and appearing to over 1.2 Million TV viewers on the WPIX Morning Show.
Be sure to pick up the Pleasure EP, the long awaited debut release from The RBC. Stay tuned for a full-length release scheduled to drop in 2011.
